The Dome

Projects

The Geodesic Dome was designed and constructed by a good friend of ours, to showcase his work at country fairs.

The concept behind the Geodesic Dome was developed by the architect R. Buckminster Fuller after World War 2. The design was revolutionary in that it had a high strength to weight ratio. It utilises the principal of ‘ doing more with less’, by enclosing the largest interior volume with the least amount of surface area, which creates a strong but lightweight structure.

It was constructed of plywood panels, a double skin with insulation material between. It was a wonderful addition to our garden: stylish, beautiful, unique and practical. A calm place to relax or to work. This was a time when a Geodesic Dome was something you might see in an architectural book or even a science fiction magazine. Certainly not available to buy anywhere as they are now.

It was sited in a corner of the garden on slightly raised ground, tucked away but with a long view across the pond through the foliage.
