Daylilies

Projects

One of my favourite regular tasks was to dead-head the large Daylily groups. They thrived in our water retentive soil and spread so enthusiastically that we had to dig, split and move them to new parts of the garden.

Over the years they became well distributed. The strong green of their clean, sharp leaf form, together with the bright orange double flowers , though lasting only a day, brought exuberant colour and form wherever they were planted.

It would take me the best part of half an hour to walk around and gently snap off the previous day’s spent blooms to ensure the flowering season lasted as long as possible.

It was very easy, very satisfying, and a fantastic way to take my time and enjoy the garden in the evenings and to have a good look at what else was happening and any jobs to attend to another day
