Making Patterns

Art

I am strangely fascinated by the idea of interchangeable patterns within a small format.

This was the first set of 36 wooden bricks I made which uses a combination of simple connecting images. The only ‘stand alone’ image is the circle, otherwise all the brick faces connect with each other in some way. The idea behind the circle brick face was to create a pause in the patterns.

As a design project this was harder than it first appears because of the complexity of the number of choices available, and as a completed set the building of each pattern in itself is quite challenging.
The result of this design experiment is the almost infinite number of possible combinations. Please press the images to view full size.
